Maldives

The Maldives is a remarkable archipelago, consisting of 1,190 small coral islands grouped into 26 atolls, on the edge of the equator, scattered across the Indian Ocean, with a temperature of 28 to 30 degrees throughout the year.

Only 185 of these islands are inhabited, while the others are widely used for tourism and agriculture. The atolls are composed of living coral reefs and sandbanks perched atop a 960 km underwater ridge, while the land has lush tropical vegetation with abundant local coconut trees.

With an average ground level of 1.5 m above sea level, the Maldives is by far the lowest country on earth and as such has a very fragile ecosystem. The capital and largest city of the Maldives is Male. The Maldives is officially a candidate for the final of the “7 Natural Wonders of the World” competition.
