THE LURE

Mancora is on the north coast of Peru and boasts some world-class wave spots and reliable swell throughout the year. Mancora and the surrounding coastline is a wave-seeker’s paradise and there are waves to suit experienced riders as well as those making their first forays into the surf.

A solidly favoured destination for intrepid wave seekers thanks its sandy banks, reasonably warm waters, an absence of sharks and waves that rarely exceed overhead in size – but are still incredibly consistent – also make it suitable for inexperienced wave riders at some spots.

The nearby town of Organos is close by and will satisfy the freeriders and beginners who want to kitesurf in front of their hotel, but it’s not an ideal place for hardcore freestylers. Although there are some really flat spots, they rely heavily on the correct wind conditions and tide level.

THE SET-UP

Situated on the north coast of Peru, Mancora has potential for infinite downwinders and eight world-class wave spots.

There are three towns close-by. Lobitos is a small, quiet hippy town with cross-off wave riding conditions out front. Organos is also quiet with a long empty beach and constant side-on winds, perfect for beginners and freerider.

Mancora isn’t a freestyle destination, although you can find one or two spots when the wind and tides line up, but the beach at Organos is ideal for beginners and freeriders too.

WIND, WEATHER & WATER

The season runs May to December but April and January can be good, too. From April to June the wind is lighter (15 – 20 knots), sometimes making it necessary to leave Mancora and drive 30 minutes to find wind. From July the wind stays consistent (18 – 28 knots) until the end of the season in late December.

Prevailing winds are from the south and southwest and the waves are good all year but can dip off a little in December. The swells come from the north or south, kicking up tidy rolling lefts throughout the season

The air temperature is dry and hot during the windy season, at 25ºC / 77ºF during the day and cold enough to sleep well without a fan during the nights. The water temperature is around 20 – 22ºC / 68 – 71º in Mancora but gets colder in the southern spots in the middle of winter (August to mid-October) dropping to 18°C / 65°F.

SCHOOL

CBCM Peru teach all levels in private or semi-private lessons using Liquid Force gear which is also available for hire or sale. They run guided trips and also offer video wave coaching, surf lessons and SUP tours. Tuition is available in Spanish, French or English and they’re open all year, apart from March and April.

ACCOMMODATION

There’s also lots of accommodation on offer. Las Pocitas is very relaxed with a beautiful beach ($80 – 350 per night). You’ll find much more modest lodgings in the village (from $8 to $130!).

NO WIND

There are three towns around Mancora. Lobitos is a small, quiet hippy town with cross-off wave riding out front and a relaxed feel. Organos is also quiet with a long empty beach and constant side-on winds – perfect for beginners and freeriders. Mancora itself is busier and there you can surf, kitesurf, visit great restaurants (in 2016, Peru had just won the World’s Leading Culinary Destination Award three years running) and there’s some nightlife too. There are ATMs, a market and shops there as well where you can get whatever you may need.

If there’s no wind then go SUPing or surfing, check out the local towns or explore the stunning mountains surround the town.

GET AROUND

Peru is very safe but you should follow basic safety rules like anywhere in South America. Don’t walk in dark empty places at night, avoid being drunk in the local bars and don’t use cheap bus companies. It’s not worth saving the few dollars. Hiring a car is expensive (as is fuel) and the area is hard to navigate. Instead, go with a guide like Wild K Club who have lots of experience in guiding kitesurfers. If you really want to rent a car, do it in Piura, two-and-a-half hours from Mancora.

FOOD & DRINK

Did you know that Peru won the World’s Leading Culinary Destination Award for the last three years? The local food is delicious, so prepare your palate!

CURRENCY

Expensive items such as your hotel bills can be paid in USD. You can change dollars and euros in Mancora, but avoid changing too much in Lima’s airport if you can.

AIRPORT

LIMA – Jorge Chávez International Airport. From there fly to Piura. A taxi or bus will then take you the rest of the way (two-anda-half hours). Luxury bus companies also run transfers, taking 16 hours from Lima and cost around USD$45 each way.

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia.

It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth. Even the all-powerful Pointing has no control about the blind texts it is an almost unorthographic life One day however.
